I hadn't seen this happen before so I thought I was safe to just read through to the end before worrying about it, but all the references to things deep in the past got me suspicious. I hadn't done much research into the series in terms of reading order beyond knowing that TMI came first, but I didn't realize (until partway through book 6) that the prequel series been released alternatingly with the second half of the first series.
